Statement
I draw in a variety of mediums on a variety of surfaces and paint either in oil on canvas or watercolor on paper. Political Needs is a trompe l'oeil still life featuring a life-size campaign hat with a patriotic ribbon set against a stark background. The key floating above the had bears the number nine, symbolically the number of unity.

Biography
Painter Walter Hatke’s work is currently represented by Gallery Henoch in New York City. His work is in public, private, and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; National Academy Museum; Art Institute of Chicago; Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art; Smith College Museum of Art; Tucson Museum of Art; Sheldon Museum of Art, University of of Nebraska; Kansai Gaidai University, Japan; Nanjing University, China; JP Morgan Chase, Hallmark, and the Boston Company. His awards and honors include the National Endowment for Art, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Ingram Merrill Foundation, and participation in the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies Program for nine years. For thirty years, he taught painting, drawing, and biological illustration at Union College and served as visiting artist, critic, and lecturer at Dartmouth College, the Kansas City Art Institute, and Yale University.
