Biography

Philip Pearlstein was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1924. After graduating high school, he enrolled at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, but was soon drafted. After leaving the army in 1946, Pearlstein returned to Carnegie and received his BFA in 1949. He moved to New York City in 1950 and had his first public gallery showing in 1952. Pearlstein received his Master’s degree from NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts in 1955, and in 1958, he was awarded a Fulbright grant, which supported a year of travel and painting abroad, passed mostly in Italy. Pearlstein’s work can be seen in public collections around the world. Throughout his career he has also taught extensively, primarily at Brooklyn College, where he was appointed distinguished professor in 1977. He’s received a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Fulbright fellowship, a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, where he served as President from 2003- 2006.
