Steve DiBenedetto, Conversation Over Baguette

Statement

I look at painting as an excursion into the nexus of the endless possibilities that may still exist there, coupled with the doubt that comes from the longstanding critical apparatus that claims painting is in fact dead. I do not take this as a negative situation at all. I find the pathos around painting is rather liberating. Concurrently, as a bid towards escaping the rhetoric that tends to discuss painting in formal and aesthetic terms (ones I was more or less educated by), I have tried to energize the proceedings by embracing themes coming from the dusty corners of various subcultures– paranormal conditions, UFO lore, and psychedelic concerns– all rendered with a healthy dose of disregard for pictorial logic.
